ROCKIN' RICCARDO MONTELEONE

2023 MBA Fighter of the Year

WBF World Cruiserweight Champion, two-time Golden Gloves Cruiserweight Champion, Pan Pacific Cruiserweight Champion, Australian Heavyweight Champion, Oceania Cruiserweight Champion, MBA Fighter of the Year.

From a young dreamer to a ring champion.

In the quiet suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, the story of Riccardo Monteleone began. His tale transcends mere fists and fights; it embodies passion, heart, and spirit. As MBA's 2023 Male Fighter of the Year and a WBF World Title holder, Riccardo distinguishes himself not only through his ring skills, but also as a mentor and coach. His journey, propelled by unwavering discipline and a fiery passion for fitness and spirituality, exemplifies the transformative power of grit. Riccardo's narrative extends beyond winning ring battles, illustrating the conquering of life’s challenges with strength and determination.

A testament to discipline.

At 56, Riccardo's intense fitness regime, anchored by a philosophy of embracing suffering — "I like to suffer in training, so I don't suffer in the ring" — has become a cornerstone of his flourishing career. Each training session, characterised by sweat and exhaustion, is not just a preparation for the next bout, but a stride towards personal greatness. Riccardo's relentless motivation, driven by a profound love for the sport and a commitment to inspire others, demonstrates that age is no barrier to athletic excellence.

The spark of a dream.

Riccardo's journey to the ring started at age 12, kindled by the allure of a gleaming trophy his friend won at a local boxing event. Hidden beneath the guise of homework sessions, he would sneak into the gym, driven by a young heart's quest for glory. His parents, initially cautious, soon became his steadfast supporters. His father evolved from a sceptic to a believer, constructing a home gym and laying the foundation for Riccardo's training haven. His mother, though apprehensive about the sport's harsh nature, rejoiced in the symbols of victory – the championship belts Riccardo brought home.

Beyond the ring: Rockin' Riccardo's multifaceted roles.

Riccardo’s life extends well beyond the boxing ring. He fulfills various roles: a coach, a mentor, and a dedicated Public Safety Officer. He is renowned as Australia’s toughest hairdresser. Each role contributes to his life story, revealing a man of multifaceted strength.

Riccardo’s commitment to boxing as his ultimate therapy is unmistakable. He credits the sport with preserving his mental well-being and keeping him grounded. Despite facing significant challenges, including the heartbreak of two failed relationships and the ongoing pain of being separated from his children, he acknowledges, "Without boxing, I can't imagine where I'd be." His primary motivation remains making his children proud, demonstrating that any goal is achievable. Remarkably, he has inspired his eldest son to secure a basketball scholarship in America.

Triumphs and challenges.

Riccardo’s boxing career surged after his first fight. He clinched State and Australian championships and represented his country in the Young Australian Team in London. Transitioning to professional boxing under his manager's guidance, his second pro fight was a gruelling battle for the State Welterweight title, spanning ten intense rounds.

At 45, Riccardo made a stunning comeback in the boxing world, claiming a Cruiserweight title fight against a younger, 28-year-old adversary. He persevered through eight challenging rounds, showcasing his prowess in the final two to secure a unanimous decision victory. This win was particularly impressive given his two-year hiatus from boxing, during which he grappled with personal struggles, including a breakup and bouts of depression. Turning his life around, Riccardo reinvigorated his dedication to training and reclaimed his position in the ring with the State Cruiserweight title.

At 47, Riccardo faced off in a riveting 10-round match for the WBF Heavyweight title against Robert Powdrill. In a stunning display, he knocked down Powdrill in the first round, narrowly losing in a split decision. Continuing to demonstrate his enduring spirit, Riccardo competed in the 2022 Australian Masters Games in Perth at 55. His key to longevity in the ring? An unyielding commitment to fitness.

The link between fitness, mental health, and boxing.

For boxers like Riccardo, the connection between fitness, mental health, and increased energy is evident. At 56, he remains dedicated to preserving the benefits of his hard-earned fitness. To Riccardo, fitness is more than a routine; it's a way of life and his primary defence strategy. As he puts it, "Without fitness and conditioning, boxing skills mean nothing." He also acknowledges the competitive nature of modern boxing, where no match is easy. Boxing is more to Riccardo than a sport; it's a sanctuary.

Masters Boxing Australia. A community beyond the ring.

Masters Boxing Australia (MBA) exemplifies the spirit of a close-knit family. In this unique environment, officials and fighters interact closely, fostering a friendly and communicative atmosphere. As a Western Australian, Riccardo has been warmly welcomed into this community. He praises MBA for its fair judging, outstanding refereeing, and the unique 'fight on' rule that enhances the competitive spirit. His time at MBA includes a memorable match against the renowned New Zealand boxer, Jeff Stutt. Their six-minute bout, featuring an impressive 276 punches thrown by Riccardo, not only displayed skills and endurance, but also forged a lasting friendship.

Training philosophy: embracing discomfort.

Riccardo's training philosophy, inspired by ultra-marathon runner and former Navy SEAL David Goggins, encapsulates the ethos of embracing discomfort.  “Get comfortable being uncomfortable”. His regimen includes rigorous assault bike workouts, enhanced by a sweat suit and an altitude mask to augment breathing and endurance. He also trains in an altitude chamber, pushing his limits in low oxygen conditions. His schedule balances strength and conditioning with weightlifting and dynamic sled exercises. As a fight approaches, he intensifies his routine with late-night runs and sparring sessions. Despite often training solo, he values the lessons and motivation from his coaches, epitomising a dedicated learner and athlete.

Persistence in the face of adversity.

Riccardo’s story is one of unyielding determination. Despite four shoulder surgeries, he persevered, focussing on his left-hand punches while his right shoulder healed. Facing further challenges like nerve pain and muscle issues, he never ceased training and fighting. His resilience was rewarded at the Australian Masters Games, where he won silver medals against larger opponents. Riccardo's journey is a testament to the power of never giving up, regardless of the odds.

Boxing is a haven.

For Riccardo, boxing is a refuge and a source of fortitude. It keeps him anchored and balanced, especially during challenging times. His dedication to boxing is fuelled by his desire to make his children proud and to inspire them to believe in limitless possibilities. Beyond the ring, he extends support to those in hardship, using his experiences to guide them towards a better life.

Faith and emotion: Riccardo's source of strength.

Faith plays a pivotal role in Riccardo Monteleone’s life. He draws motivation from worship music, believing it enhances his strength and conviction. Known for his calm demeanour and energy conservation, he adheres to a pre-fight ritual of prayers, with his pastor praying for his and his opponent’s safety, a practice he’s maintained since his early boxing days.

Known as Rockin' Riccardo, he openly expresses his emotions. His profound faith provides deep life insights. As a mentor, he aids others through difficult periods, empowering them to regain control of their lives. He takes immense pride in witnessing people overcome challenges and achieve success.
